What to Expect For Your Orthotics Evaluation

What is Orthotics? 

Foot orthoses are any one of several types of adaptive devices that can be custom-made to meet each patient's unique needs. Typical orthotics look like special shoe inserts, but can be more involved (including ankle/foot braces, and orthotics with the capacity for neuromotor stimulation). Orthotics has many uses, and their exact function will depend on the individual's needs. At our clinic, we have used custom orthotics as an adjunct to the treatment of many disorders including:

• Plantar fasciitis
• Chronic joint pain, including at the foot, knee, hip, and spine
• work- or sports-related problems, including repetitive or overuse injuries

What Should I Expect During my Orthotics Evaluation?

During your orthotics evaluation, one of our chiropractors will complete a detailed examination of not only your affected joint or joints, but also of your entire body. This may include a postural screen, strength and mobility assessment, and lifestyle and nutritional history questionnaires. 

The unique needs of a particular patient--and hence the type of orthotics designed and prescribed--will vary greatly and must be carefully assessed during every evaluation. Unique factors that may influence the type of orthotics your chiropractor prescribes include:

• Type, severity level, and underlying cause of the primary problem
• Patient age
• Patient weight
• Patient activity level 

These factors, along with several others, will be thoroughly examined and evaluated by your chiropractor. Once your specific needs and unique factors have been identified, your chiropractor will use 3D technology to scan your feet and design and create your custom orthotics.
